How about a Lenovo T61?

I am using Thinkpads since 1999, started with T21, then T23, T41 and now T60.
My missus has a Vaio SZ, which I think a bit overpriced in its category.  Dell seems to give you better specs for same money.

With the cheapest MBP coming in at $3400 your budget would cover that in any case. What about a Macbook? Not a huge difference between the two (unless you're running graphic intensive software)

I can get the basic 15@ 2.2ghz mbp for $2950 w/student discount.
I'm really after a laptop with 'decent' graphics.
