I had been hoping for an updated Macbook pro today..no dice... so I need some recommendations on decent desktop replacement laptops. In the $2000-3000 price range.

Hmmmm, look at the FZ series, but I don't like the look of them so much as the 13.3" SZ58 :-)

VAIO VAIO VAIO

I have a SZ and a C series - both have been trouble free and great to use - although only 13.3"  I'm sure the FZ are just as good though.

I'm after Penryn, so I'll be waiting until early-mid Feb.

If looks are important then Sony and Mac are two at the top of most consumers lists. Unfortunately both charge through the nose for it.

The Dell M1330 is very nice. Of course, I'm totally biased since I bought one. They look a bit like the Sony's, without the massive price tag.

Deaktop replacement?  You need a MANS laptop (insert grunting here): http://crave.cnet.co.uk/video/0,139101587,49284379,00.htm

I tend to agree with this. I would love a Sony Vaio, but I instead decided to buy a Dell Inspiron 1520 because it offered much, much better specs for the price.

What's wrong with MBPs??? I was thinking of buying one so if you have a reason why not to buy one...I'd appreciate it!

There's nothing wrong with them, but Apple seem to refresh their products less frequently than many other major vendors so if the machine that you're thinking of buying is near the end of its product cycle then you would get better value if you can hold off until a refreshed model is released.
