Can't find the link now - but remember coming across a support doc that basically said most HP devices had to have a BIOS update later than or around Jan 2020 to upgrade beyond Win10 1909

regards,
Clint

Its not you :-)
The HP website is a disgrace.

To be honest, I often need to use google to find the correct HP support page , as using HP's search is to often a complete waste of time.
Trying to navigate around is sometimes just frustrating
Even when you find the correct suuport page for your laptop/pc , HP have no idea of the Hardware in it & give you a mulitichoice of drivers to pick from
eg, 4 or 5 differnet drivers for (say) lan depending on what hardware is  actually in it, because they dont know .

Ive even had CURRENT products not showing on the HP site (I just want specs) , as if it didnt exist . Found the correct HP page via google .

Also be aware , even the bios updates on the product support page can be wrong . Ive had that & bricked a new HP PC (had it replaced under warranty)

linw:

I am having a LOT of trouble overcoming a windows upgrade error that has stuck this comp on win 10 1909.

to fix that I usually ...

Download the full Win10 installer from MS , & install over the top from with Windows
That often solves those ug isues . Disable (or remove) any 3rd party AV or Firewall software if needed .
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

If that doesnt work , a clean install of Win10 should work . But image the HD just in case & backup docs & emails etc .

Thanks for responses all. This has 8GB RAM and, yes, if I could get it updated I would propose she get an SSD. ALL comps should have one!

I have worked on PC's for many years and have to say I have never given up until now! I just couldn't seem to get it on with the update. Probably the 5 hour time to produce an unusable comp says a lot about the retries and difficulties it was having.

Cheers.

I appreciate I’m 3 months late answering this but perhaps the link will be useful to someone. I was gifted a 15-bw049AU today, and the result of attempting to USB boot 21H1 was a multi-coloured display failure until I applied this BIOS update: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp100501-101000/sp100873.exe, following this it was successful. HTH.
