I am working on a HP Notebook (I think!) that has a model no. of 15-bw049AU. Problem is this doesn't seem to exist on the HP sites! Nor does its serial no. The HP site tried to find it by interrogating the laptop but it just kept looking for about an hour before I killed it! Not impressed with HP sites - the enquiry site went offline as well.

I am having a LOT of trouble overcoming a windows upgrade error that has stuck this comp on win 10 1909.

One of the things I wanted to do was update the BIOS but this isn't going to happen if I can't be certain of downloading the right one!

Cheers.

Try to look up the serial number (and other items) from within windows.

Pull up a command prompt and enter this command "wmic bios get serialnumber" and you should get the correct asset info from the bios

Heres an external link to a few other methods...

The HP Support Assistant is better these days than my recollection of it in the past and will tell you model and serial number, plus help with updates.  It asks you to register but you can skip past this.

https://www.hp.com/nz-en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

We use and really like the HP commercial gear, but like many tech manufacturers, the HP consumer stuff is short lived and by comparison not well supported.  I can only put this dwn to the realities of selling to consumers who have deep pockets but short arms.

Thanks, for that but HP couldn't find the serial number, either. They're useless. They can't find the model or serial number printed on this laptop.

Their program 'compiling my results' is still going after an hour!!  They can't even write a program that knows when to give up.

Excuse my frustration but I have spent 3 days trying to get this thing to reset.

Sheesh...  that's not flash.

Any chance the information is available in the BIOS screens somewhere?

As much as I hate the HP software, install the Support Assistant and it will generally pickup any relevant updates etc.

Thank you very much everyone for pitching in on this one. I have spent three days on this and am thoroughly hacked off I didn't see those sites you found in 30 sec!!!

Lesson 1 - go to GZ straight away.

Anyway, I've had this thing up to my neck so giving it back to owner to decide when she needs to ditch it. At least it is running quite a bit faster than when I first got it but don't ask me why!

I can sleep a bit better tonight!

Probably a good call.

Part of the reason I was looking for this sort of trouble is that I have an original HP X2 210 that is stuck on a 1903 (from memory) build of Windows 10 due to a driver limitation with that Atom processor and its chipset.

Any slow laptop I come across, gets a new SSD and Windows 10 install and 8 GB RAM. Never hear back from owners about it being slow ;)

I do find consumer laptops generally are slow though.

Seen this 3 or 4 times the last few weeks. The link @xpd found is exactly what we found too and does resolve the issue.

If you look in System Information, msinfo32, wmic etc.. you should find something like 'HP 15-bw0xx Notebook' then you replace the x's with 0's and that should usually give you the generic series of the model and the BIOS.
