I don't get the negativity about Chromebooks. If the use case us purely web applications what would be the benefit of spending money on a powerful machine with lots of memory and disk space?

We got our son a Chromebook for school where they use the Google apps suite. It works just fine and cannot run most games which is a real benefit, as is the parental control.

If they are connected to a google infrastructure and used in a google environment, they are great.

If you're trying to shoehorn one in to an environment they are not designed for (Say 365) then they are not so great. No one is saying to buy a mobile workstation, just a machine that runs Windows or MacOS, especially if expecting any sort of IT support with issues.

My personal leaning would be a pre owned MacBook Air if I could find a trustworthy one. She’s not keen to spend the money on a new one at $2k plus just to effectively provide functionality she thinks her current employer should provide but won’t.

So.

Eventually SWMBO accepted cheap wasn’t really going to deliver the desired outcome!

Refurbished MacBook Air M2 arrived on Friday! Wasn’t heaps more than M1 and had the 512 SSD which is apparently better than the base one.

As ever, it looks brand new.

Interestingly, the Air is now a lot heavier than the original - my MacBook Pro really doesn’t seem massively heavy in comparison.

Of course, this Air has 8GB of RAM compared to the 64 in mine, so even with the M2 chip it’s slower with major tasks. No difference in day to day stuff though.
