freitasm: Have you checked the Power app in Control Panel to see if the cooling policy is set to Passive instead of Active?

Yes they're set to passive. HP have arranged a pick up by courier to get the laptop repaired. They said because we've done a BIOS update and its still having issues, then it has to be hardware. Does that seem right?

Sure does.  Laptops these days are built pretty compact and sometimes overheating problems aren't found until they've been out in the field a while.  A single bad application of heat transferring material between the CPU/GPU and the cooling mechanism can cause this.

Side Note: My laptop has a known overheating issue, Dell still don't acknowledge it though.  People got creative and found a way to install a little copper shim to cool it properly.  I ended up doing it and my laptop is rock solid now.  Warranty be damned (they'd never notice anyway)

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

Also if it's passive it means the processor will be clocked down instead of turning the fans on. Changing to active means shorter battery life (if not plugged in to mains) but the fan starts earlier.

So that's what it was set to before I updated the BIOS?

Regardless, if your laptop is shutting down due to overheating, there's a problem.

Ok cool. I know it can't be dirt/lint whatever caught in the fan, because this thing is at my desk most of the time anyway and only goes on my lap maybe once a week, for an hour when my show is on, if that, because most of the time its on the coffee table because its too hot to use on my lap without burning it.

You'd be amazed at how much dust a laptop will pull out of the air.  I clean the fluff out of my CPU cooler in my laptop once a month.  I even have a Google reminder so I don't forget, because the cooling on my laptop is so badly designed that heat levels get up quickly.

As a bit of fluff gets stuck in there, it's easier for other bits of fluff to get stuck in there and the problem compounds and compounds.  So don't rule out blocked airflow, it's very, very common.

That said, laptops these days mostly take this into consideration with their heat dissipation designs.  The ones that don't (like mine), well, they have these problems.

Just before, my friend came over to my house because we just went out and brought him a netbook and he wanted to set it up. I was showing him how my computer's been messing up so I opened minecraft and played it normal for a few minutes. Nothing happened. and I was like "typical as soon as I go to show someone it doesnt do it" and the screen shut off and came back on and said the graphics driver crashed. I'm assuming the graphics card shut off or something because of the heat. It hasn't done that ever. So I'm going to get another family member to hold the laptop on monday when the courier company comes to collect it since I can't stay home and wait for them myself. I hope they're quick because its the start of term on monday and I'm sure I'll have a LOT of homework to do... HP also told me they're not sending a loan laptop or anything and I just have to wait a couple of weeks for it to be fixed.

So should I try my luck and take it to harvey norman? They do loan laptops but I'm not sure they'd have one available. I'll call now and see.
