I read about that too. Is it true that the 8700M is an overclocked 8600M? If so, do you think it is worth the price of the notebook? $4300?

I've found no differences in the internal architecture, but faster clock speeds usually entail better quality parts and ways to get rid of the extra heat.

It's not worth a penny over $4000 to me, hence I'm waiting for it to appear on one of those online stores that lack a shop front and sales reps.

I can only tell you what it's worth to me. I'd pay, with a fair amount of anguish, $4000 for it, but I'd be a great deal happier paying only $3000 for a high end gaming laptop like the x200-02j022, and ecstatic if I could have one for $350.

Well, $3500 would be great, but then again, $0 would be even better! Haha. Let's be realistic though:)

I think this model notebook is worth $4000. It has a HD DVD drive, HDMI input, two hard drives and together with everything else!

Sorry to double post guys but I really think it is fairly important to post this separately.

What is the advantage of having two separate hard drives in a notebook computer like this one, apart from more space for files? I heard from my IT colleague that if one hard drive fails, the notebook will continue to run and all files are backed-up immediately. Is this true?

You can set up a RAID 0 array. In this case two 160GB drives are seen and used by the operating system as a single 320GB drive. The advantage being that you now have data passing through two channels simultaneously resulting in fast(er) read and write speeds. Of course, with software RAID ( also known as fake RAID) software drivers emulate the functions of a hardware RAID controller, so you only get about a 20% to 50% speed increase, but hardware RAID is expensive.

Yes. That's called RAID 1. One drive is used as a mirror image of the other, so if one drive fails the OS still has a working drive to full back on. Of course under RAID 1 the OS sees only 160GB drive, however, at least your data won't be destroyed should a drive die.

I've never had a notebook before. So, not sure. RAID is setup via a BIOS program (similar to CMOS setup) and then RAID drivers are loaded off a diskette or CD by the Windows installation process so it can recognize the RAID array you've set up in BIOS, then it's just a matter of formatting the array (just like any single drive) and installing the OS to it. That's how it worked on my desktop PC, anyway.

No. That's the disadvantage of RAID 0.

Only 3.27kgs. This is same weight as my P100 running XP Pro - perhaps even slightly lighter. The X200 has a larger casing.

Ack this is driving me nuts, when will Harvey Norman have it, I obviously can't go to Portables Plus since their exchanging my P100 for it.
Whats the bet it doesn't come in on the 18th? Called Wairau Park and Botany today and they both give different dates, I think they don't actually know. Botany told me this month, Wairau Park says next few days.

If it's the same size and weight as the P100, I think you might want to go for something a bit smaller if your wanting to carry it around. I think the 17" desktop replacements are for people who usually use the computer at work or home but then occasionally have to carry it around with them.

Edit: Ack, I just called Harvey Norman again now I'm being told theres no ETA on it because they are a high end model. (^ω^)
