So far, the problem is persisting even with a local account. Updates (46) are installing now so I'll test once again after they have been installed. If it's still a problem I'll return it to the retailer and hopefully they treat it as an out of box fault.
I called the retailer who advised that they'd swap the tablet for a new one. I then called the Microsoft helpline and got a case number for the fault. They also advised that the tablet needed to be replaced. Took it back to the retailer yesterday and they swapped it out. The new one is working perfectly so far.
