I have just bought a Strontium 4GB ddr3 1333mhz RAM for my laptop. I installed it and now my computer should have a total of 8gb. But once I start up the computer it just stays there as a black screen and the CAPs LOCK light is blinking.

Is the ram i bought not supported? Or have i done something wrong? Need to wait longer for it to recognize??
TIA

No bios screen?

can you post a link to the manual and the [exact] ram you purchased?

[edit: you can also try it just with the new ram and see if that is happy by itself]

According to DV6 manual it appears to be the correct type. Is it DOA? Any other slots to try it in?

I bought two off him and another guy bought one off him too but he said his worked fine as stated on the feedback comments. The other RAM doesn't work on the HP either.

photos are too small to get any information off.

you'll have to type it all out.

please link to the manual also.

what information on the RAM do you actually want?
Everything that was on the RAM was typed out in the topic. And the manual to what? If its to the laptop, i can't seem to find one on Google.

Most likely the RAM is the right type but not the right speed, at least with the ones you already have in there.

The manual gives an HP part number for the memory:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02842252.pdf

621569-001 - 4-GB (DDR3, 10600, 1333-MHz)

HP's part lookup gives an expanded specification of that part number:

http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=621569-001

4GB, 1333MHz, PC3-10600, CL=9, DDR3-1333

Based on the specification on this third party website I'd guess the full spec also includes:

http://www.techexcess.net/621569-001-Hp-4gb-Ddr3-1333-Pc3-10600-Cl-9-204-Pin-Sodimm-Memory-Module.aspx

Non-ECC, Unbuffered, 1.5 V

The next step is looking up the Strontium part number you have and seeing if it matches or differs from those specifications (in bold).

If it is different, then we need to talk about your bios.

3rd party websites say that HP part number is this Micron module:

http://download.micron.com/pdf/datasheets/modules/ddr3/jsf16c256_512x64hz.pdf

No detailed PDF from Strontium, just this:

http://www.strontium.biz/products/memory-modules/notebook-memory/ddr3-4gb-1333mhz

I'm no expert, but I'd expect these to be compatible in most cases.

Where things sometimes fall down is bios auto-detection of the correct settings for the memory.

I'm not sure if a bad auto detect can prevent POST (?).

If there is no POST and you can't get into bios, you can't see what the auto detect might be for the Strontium.

I'd suggest going into bios while it is running and posting a photo of the available memory configuration options. Also use Strontium's technical support contact page and ask them to suggest bios settings for that memory.

One option is to copy the auto detected settings for the HP ram and set those manually and save, then shut down and install the Strontium ram.
