I've been wondering if I should import the Dell Inspirion 15r Special Edition from US or just get it from the NZ Site.
The US version right now sells for 1000 USD which is 1253 NZD. Adding Import costs which is 15 percent is around 1440 NZD. There's no Heavy Duty costs for laptops(or none I know of and I'm pretty sure I've checked that Tax site a lot)
The US version has
3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM processor (6M Cache, up to 3.1 GHz)
8GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz750GB
7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
AMD Radeon™ HD 7730M 2GB
8X Tray Load CD/DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
Stealth Black Anodized Aluminum
15.6" Full High Definition (1080p) LED Display
48 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion BatteryIntel® Centrino® Wireless 2230, 2x2 bgn + BluetoothWaves MaxxAudio 4 + Skullcandy SpeakersIntegrated 10/100/1000
Gigabit Ethernet card
The NZ version right now sells for 1400 NZD as a comparison.
3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM Processor (6MB cache, up to 3.1 GHz)Inspiron 15R (7520) BTX Base
15.6" HD WLED True-Life (1366x768)
8GB 2 DIMM (4GB x2) DDR3 1600Mhz
1.0TB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive12.7" SATA Tray Load DVD+/-RW
AMD Radeon™ HD 7730M DDR3 2GB
The difference between those two is that the US version has 1080p LED screen and faster HD of 7200RPM with 250 less hard drive space. Things I'm not sure of is the Warranties. I'm not particularly sure if the extended warranties are worth purchasing and if they are then NZ is around 240.35 NZD. The USD version is around 290 USD which is currently 363 NZD.
So overall, Adding costs together, the US version has a total cost of 1800 NZD. The NZ version has a total cost of 1640 NZD. While there is a cost difference, the NZ version doesn't have an HD screen which costs around 100 Dollars NZD and a hard drive upgrade is around 50 dollars. (for some reason, you can't upgrade the screens or harddrive).
The only comparable Hard drive is the other model costing 1800 NZD which has the following specs;
3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM Processor (6MB cache, up to 3.1 GHz)Inspiron 15R (7520) BTX Base
15.6" FHD Anti-glare (1920x1080)
8GB 2 DIMM (4GB x2) DDR3 1600Mhz
1.0TB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive12.7" Tray Load Blu-ray (BD) Combo Drive (BD Read Only)
AMD Radeon™ HD 7730M DDR3 2GB
The difference between this and the US model is that This one doesn't have a faster harddrive speed, has a Bluray drive but doesn't include the extended warranties in the 1800 NZD costs.
The question is... Despite being cheaper, is it really worth getting the USD version when it comes to importing, warranties etc. And also, Just how reliable is Dell right now. Is it good enough so that extended warranties aren't really necessary? And if you know anything else I should consider, please mention it.
