I have 2 laptops which are due for an upgrade and was tempted by a Dell Inspiron 17R SE
- i7 3630QM
- Nvidia GTX 650M
- 17" 1080p screen
$1300 NZD down from $2200

Now the thing is:

I could wait till Christmas for a Haswell system maybe a couple of hundred bucks more expensive but I am wondering about a few things

1) Will Haswell save A LOT of power? (percentage?) - this is a desktop replacement so most of the time it's plugged in so unless Haswell lasts like twice as long i'm not waiting

2) Will Haswell be A LOT faster? (percentage) - i read somewhere maybe upto 10% faster for the same clock speed - not a need to wait

3) Will laptops give me a 17" touchscreen for the same price (will price go up for touch screen) by the end of the year? - otherwise no need to wait

4) Will mid-high end Haswell systems still come with a separate graphics chip like currently? if yes then there's not need to wait ... but if graphics chips will disappear from mid-midhigh end systems then the power savings will be tremendous!!!

I think no one knows but if someone knows something please share :D

Perhaps:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/262156/intel_hopes_to_double_ultrabook_battery_life_with_haswell_chip.html

pc world wrote:

The battery life will be doubled on convertible ultrabooks with the sub-10-watt Haswell processors, which is an improvement over a minimum of 17 watts of power consumed by the current Ivy Bridge chips.

"We are going to nearly double the battery life," said Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of the PC client group, in a separate presentation at IDF.

10% is what I have seen too.

3) Will laptops give me a 17" touchscreen for the same price

I'm not sure if anyone knows about pricing yet.

4) Will mid-high end Haswell systems still come with a separate graphics chip like currently?

Depends what you call mid-high end. There is support for 4K graphics with 4096 by 3072 pixels and the benchmarks seen so far suggest a decent improvement in GPU performance.

There does seem to be a worthwhile improvement in graphics performance, but is it enough for you and perhaps the laptops that you are interested in might include a separate GPU anyway.

expired, i ordered as a "pay online" and it hasn't emailed me to say my non payment has made the deal expire

the only difference between the system i "ordered" and this one is this one is listed as RRP$2500 and has 3d capable screen and 2x 1TB hd (compared to 1x1TB)

the next definite super deal would be the 2 weeks leading up to christmas - always have 30-40% off something but may not be the model or configuration you want (the available config changes every week and the CSR may or may not have access to click the config you are after - so weird!!) [eg sometimes only available screen is 1600x800 but perhaps the world has moved on and it will always be 1080p from now - we will see][also i would really prefer dual channel wifi for fast speed but not sure if ever possible in this model]

Damm, for $1300 this would have been an instant buy after checking out the spec.

I might keep and eye on on their website for specials like this. Hopefully I can snatch one up.

Just out of interest, so I can guess when the next might happen, when was the deal, was it during this weeking?
