So it's been a few years since I looked at buying a new laptop. I've done some research, including having a look at some of the other threads, and I've also looked at all the websites of retailers in my area and still find myself feeling a bit green, especially when it comes to talking about Processors and graphics cards etc. The things I'm looking for in a laptop are

15.6 inch screen or above
Decent resolution
750GB/1TB hard drive
Fast
I'm not bothered by it having a CD drive or not
Like most people, bang for buck
Has to look good too

What it will be used for is some light gaming, general web use i.e. youtube, news, Facebook and email, watching movies, and using Microsoft Office.

Im interested to know what you would suggest or what you would buy if you were in my shoes. Also, what brands are good and which should I avoid...

I shopped around today. Went to Noel Leeming, JBHifi, Harvey Norman looking to buy a laptop. I was just about to buy this

but started chatting to a guy who was also shopping around who mentioned Warehouse Stationary. Seemed like it was a nice upgrade in specs from the original one we were about to buy, and the closest Harvey Norman could price match it was to $1599. I feel like it was a good buy. The sales person at Warehouse Stationary even gave it to us a bit cheaper than the discounted price.

I like the warehouse stationary one. It's a really good time to snatch up a decent laptop for a good price, now that the 4th gen processors are coming out such as the i7 4700mq, and the new GTX 765M graphics cards etc. Which will be replacing these laptops next.

I'm hoping there is a sale near the end of the year for these upcoming laptop models, otherwise might get desperate and order a custom-made Clevo from the US with some ridiculous specs haha.

I'm happy with it, although the screen resolution is nothing to write home about but they all seem to be the same at that price range. Warehouse Stationery also have a 14 day change of mind policy, im not sure if the other retailers offer the same, but this was very reassuring.

On another note, I feel that HP really needs to simplify there range. They have so many different models with very similar specs.

That one has decent enough specs, other than the screen. The Samsung S4 screen has more pixels. You have to pay a bunch more to get a better screen though.
