Hi, Mrs.Darth here

I currently have an Acer Aspire 5920. I have had it five years, and recently had to have a full system restore due to my laptop being totally virus-ridden. When I picked it up from the store, I was told that Acer isn't a favourable brand performance-wise and there are other brands that are better.

Your thoughts/opinions please.

I've never had any issues with acer personally. I also use HP. No issues there either.

While I wouldn't say Acer are a bad brand, I'd certainly say their strength is in low-end, affordable devices. They'd be quite a way down my list if I were shopping for a performance device. If I were looking for a mid-to-high end device, I'd be looking at Asus or HP, or if it was primarily for gaming and couldn't be a desktop, MSI.

Highly variable.

Comments about previous models may not be valid.

I'd say go with the ones with the features you want, try google for reviews and go for it.

Currently using an MSI, good quality and excellent value for money but high end performance/gaming. Old laptop was Acer, was fairly low spec wasn't bad but it wasn't that great either as far as build quality.

Acer are okay if the issues are relatively minor to repair.

The problem is when you have a major issue which basically requires a replacement laptop. In these situations Acer - from my experience - can be very difficult to deal with.

Any laptop with a serious gaming GPU will give you issues if you game with it long enough. I suppose if one regularly cleans, it might make a difference. Of course a decent clean means voiding the warranty, so...

Toshiba seem fairly solid, from past experience.

I suppose it will all come down to what you use it for. Gaming? Email, surfing the web etc? Photo manipulation?
These days I have a HP dv6 (2 years old) and that's worked fine. My daughter uses my 4-5 year old Acer for web games and skype. Works fine.
For general web use I have a Samsung chromebook.

We really only use it for internet usage. I was told Asus is a fairly good brand, and Sony Vaio was favourable when it came to servicing out of warranty period.

i have had 2 acer laptops one is coming up to 5 years old and the other 1 nearly a year old and never have had a problem with either of them , my son has a HP and its been back to the shop twice in 2 years and it was a high spec model so who knows.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I quite like acer now. The timeline series are very good. Ultrabooks like the S7 are excellent.
Even the entry level models are good bang for the buck, aesthetically pleasing and reasonably robust.

They are easier to service usually than something like an HP consumer level notebook.

I would definitely purchase acer laptops again. Asus, Acer, and Apple are some of my favourites at the moment. Friends don't let friends buy HP

Reliability is good across all the major brands (Acer, Apple, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba) these days, failure rates are only 5-10% within the first 3 years.

I would choose a new laptop on a model vs model basis, mostly on on aesthetics and how well they support their products with driver updates.

I'd say Acer, Asus, and Sony, Samsung and Lenovo are to be avoided unless you don't mind length service delays.

HP and Toshiba tend to be better, but you gets for what you pays for and buying consumer grade hardware with consumer grade warranty support will always be worse than Business Grade Hardware and Warranties.

I'd buy a Sony or Samsung as a secondary device, but never a primary.
