So basically I had to take my computer to this IT guy to get it fixed because the Graphics Card burned up or something. (I can't remember).

He fixed it, and increased the fan spin so it wouldn't overheat. Wouldn't this decrease the life of the laptop because the fan is constantly spinning faster?

Also, when I close the lid, the screen turns off and goes to sleep, but the fan still runs? I have checked power settings on CP and it says "Upon lid shutting, computer goes to sleep". Why won't the fan go to sleep also?

Whats the make and model of laptop ?

Its possible to have fans set in some laptops spin for x amount of time after going to sleep, however its not normal at all. Its possible the "It guy" you took it too has either put in an incorrect generic part or had hardwired the power for the fan to some other point in the laptop, but that would be a little extreme.

Try downloading speed fan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) and see if you can confirm any sensors showing the fan moving at full speed for long periods of time.

If the fan draws more power. yes it will decrease battery life.
That is strange why it doesnt shut off. I would suspect they have routed it directly to a power source? When a laptop goes to sleep it may still have a fan running if its hot. My one does that.

There are usually bios settings for fan action. Your guy has probably changed some.

I suggest taking it back and explain to him what the shutdown problem is.

He will probably tweak the settings a bit so it does not occur, and probably for free.

The computer is either not sleeping or it's taking a long time to sleep. That's why.

Maybe do some test giving a long period of time like an hour or two so you can know for sure. That should be more than enough.

The answer might be complex. Any chance you can take it back to the guy that made the change and tell him the issue? I imagine he will probably resolve it for free.

If not, post the exact make and model of your laptop. The problem is that stuffing around with the settings might or might not get to the bottom of it, depending on the complexity of what your guy was trying to achieve.
