Hi Guys

My cousin just informed me that his girlfriends laptop was stolen and he can see when they come online because his girlfriend shows up on MSN. Is there any way you can track these people and maybe expoit some security hole in XP? ive heard of it being done on a Mac before but couldnt find anything on windows other than programs to install before it gets nicked!

Maybe use something like this to get the IP and then contact the police

Ok I just tried that out and it appears that as soon as you open a conversation with someone it opens a tcp connection to them

So wait for them to sign in to msn thne open a conversation window
Next go to start then run and type cmd

A window will open up and type this netstat -b -p TCP

Near the bottom there should be an entry something along the lines of

 TCP    ***:4166              ip-**-**-**-*.*-dsl.xnet.co.nz:***  ESTABLISHED     1104
 [msnmsgr.exe]

Obviously they probably won't be on xnet but the key thing to note is the [msnmsgr.exe] and the ip address with ending on .nz

Note there may be other entries by msnmsgr but these are messenger talking to the server so ignore ones like this

 TCP    ***:4142              by1msg2245408.phx.gbl:1863  ESTABLISHED     1104
 [msnmsgr.exe]

 TCP    ***:4160              ***.**.***.**:http    ESTABLISHED     1104
 [msnmsgr.exe]

awesome thanks for that! if we can get the ipaddress we can do a whois to see which isp it belongs to then the police should be able to get them to track it down to an individual user account.

Is there dial-up networking set up on the laptop? If so, may could be using it - perhaps check with your cousin's GF's ISP?
