OK all - I need some advice.
I'm in the market for a new notebook for purely business use. It'll need all the usual networking stuff and a 14" screen. I mainly use hosted software and don't do any fancy schmancy graphics stuff or play games so processing is pretty sedate. It wants to me rugged and needs either visat business (bad) or xp pro OS

Budget is around $1500 plus GST

Any suggestions would be appreciated

On that budget, and based on what you are saying I would be happy with one of the current Compaq models (if buying from a retailer) or some Dell (if buying online).

I have had experience with both brands in the last few months and they worked well for their intended use (mainly browsing, word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mails). No fancy graphics options included...

I agree with freitasm. If you need something right away then get an HP/Compaq off the shelf but if you can afford to wait a couple of weeks then you're likely to get better value from Dell than anywhere else.

Warehouse Stationery have some clearance specials on Alienware machines but these only have Windows XP Home and the specs don't seem that good for the price despite the supposedly heavy discounts.

Oh, I see. No I didn't get one. You see, this is a community site, and I am blogger. I am not mainstream media - even though our numbers are bigger than most...

If you can try to make sure it comes with a 3yr preferably ON SITE + Hardware + Labour warranty, unfortunatly quite a few people i know have been caught out with warranties that say say 3 yr but that is hardware only, they charge for labour and onsite call out after the first year....
