Hi,

I need to send my laptop to a friend in Rotorua (I'm in Auckland) and wondering that is that safe to send it via nzpost ?

It's hard for me to catch the bus to Rotorua as I'm quite busy recently.

I've asked a guy in nzpost about that and he said that it'll be alright to send it, they also give me a insurance for that. I don't have the original box so I will buy a bubble wrap and put it in a box.

If you guys have any experience about this, let me know then, many thanks :)

For sending it with any company, I would put it in a large padded box. Pass the parcel has some packaging suggestions which are helpful. http://www.passtheparcel.co.nz/Help/Packaging

Pack it well and it will be fine. I don't think the insurance covers you for crap packing. I'd recommend a good sturdy box and thick but crashable packaging.

If you don't feel comfortable dropping it onto an upturned chair from a metre, it's not packed well enough IMO.

Yup, I'll use courier, not post. Yeah, I think the most important thing to do is my packaging, will definitely throw a pile of bubble wrap with it. Do you guy know where to get some "foam peanut" or "foam blocks" (the tiny soft thing they usually put in the box to prevent unwanted movement of the goods)?

If you insure it and you say it's a laptop they'll demand that you take out the battery and pack it separately..

Courier Post sell all that stuff. Alternatively, Warehouse Stationery, Paper Plus, any Post Shop.

Warehouse stationary is a lot cheaper for packaging materials than NZ Post, but you may have to buy more. NZ Post sells a little bit of bubble wrap for $5, WS sells 50m for $20.

Last I tried, NZ post were all freaking out because it had a battery in it and wouldnt take it without removing it which was not possible.

Went to a different post shop and sent it as IT equipment or computer parts or something that was not "laptop" and was not asked about a battery so no drama. Person was insistant on using NZ post because they were rural and thought that rural surcharges were outragious and blah blah "Im a idiot trademe buyer chooing to live in the whopwhops" ranting so I just obliged. Ended up costing more than the courier and rural ticket would have anyway.

You cannot legally send lithium batts in the post. They are Prohibited items & there are fines that can apply for those caught trying. If caught, you could have the item confiscated & destroyed with no compensation (that has started happening)

If NZ post are going to have these restrictions, its about damn time they instructed their staff & depots about them

Check out http://www.packsend.co.nz/ I used them to send my home theatre projector to Auckland from Wellington for a warranty repair. They pack it and insure it.
