Hi All

My boss has asked me for some advice on buying a laptop. So i thought i had better come on here and ask advice from you guru's. These are the two she wants to choose from. Her specifacations being powerful and looking good. She will be doing a lot of travelling with it so it will need to be quite resiliant as well as functional.

Compaq Presario B1200 Notebook

or

VAIO CR Series Notebook

Would you be able to share pros and cons with me please. I have had a look at the specifactions but it all just confuses me a bit.

Cheers in advance

If prices are similar I'd go with the Compaq - 100% more disc and 100% more memory...

If it has to be "good looking" then I'd suggest a Sony Viao or Apple Mac.

I'm compiling a list of criteria for a new laptop, here is my list so far:
Vista Premium
SATA hard drive
15+ inch screen
Power socket on left hand side
Memory card reader
Ethernet socket
Type 2 PC card socket
3 year warranty
User able to upgrade memory
User able to upgrade hard drive
No heat vents on the underside
No headphone sockets on the front side

These are my preferences, I'm sure your boss doesn't care about some of these.

again - the compaq (because you can never have too much diskspace or memory)..

Have you considered a tablet? I had one for about a year up until recently and would swear it was the best thing since sliced bread. Ultimately the choice will depend on your bosses' work habits - but if they are going to be travelling, having lots of meetings out of the office - in general being very mobile and out of the office more than 50% of the time - it may be worth considering.

I imagine opinions re tablets are very divided - and I was pretty sceptical having heard bad things about them - but once I got one it was great.  Especially useful was the ability to keep meeting notes in my own handwriting on the tablet and take them around with me. No disputes in follow up meetings when you can pull up the notes from a previous meeting right onto your tablet.

Since it sat in a docking station back at the office when I was in town - it was my main PC as well - so it had all my financial spreadsheets, memos, reports, diagrams, presentations, company literature ,etc, sitting right there ready to access.  Very powerful work tool when you can sit in a meeting and actually bring up a company or project spreadsheet, brochure, etc. Also very handy when you're at someone elses office at their project dies.  Swivel the screen and you can still do the presentation.

Also - with wifi and bluetooth - if a person wanted a copy then it was no problem.  You could beam, transmit info directly to them at that time. If I had short breaks between meetings - dial up the 3G EVDO card, log back into the office and answer a few quick emails (my tablet had a full size swivel keyboard).  Sitting in a cafe or at an airport lounge answering emails - hooked into the net either via wifi or 3G - I never failed to get a question from some passing exec as to what the hell was that thing I was using.

anyway - enough ranting.....
