Hi,

As per subject, please reccomend a laptop repair outfit in Auckland, at this point I am leaning towards serviceplus but at $90 just for diagnosis I am keen for other suggestions.

In case anyone has thoughts on the issue, I have a Sony vaio laptop where the screen intermittently works but graphics do work via hdmi output. Would appear to be a hardware issue as the same behaviour appears under different OS'.

How old is the laptop and where was it purchased? Remember even if out of warranty period, you may still be covered under the CGA (assuming not a business laptop)

It's my mother's so I'm not 100% sure but I think it came from just laptops, and its over a year old so it's out of warranty but I think less than 2 years old.

sounds like you're easily covered by CGA. Reasonable timeframe for a laptop to last has got to be 5 years IMHO

Yeah, you should invoke your CGA rights with the retailer. Less than two years is not an acceptable timeframe for an expensive piece of equipment to fail.

But to the other question, $90 is about your limit. Last time I was away, the other half scoured the Wellington region after the laptop hard drive went south, and couldn't find anyone cheaper than $90 for diagnosis (plus hardware replacement costs, plus more time to install the hard drive, plus the OS install costs). She did it herself for $80. Something tells me that won't be an option in your case. :) So CGA first, and don't take no for an answer.

NZ Laptops in Pakuranga are excellent.

No I don't work for them. I think inspection fee is $50 but only if you dont go ahead with repair.

Sounds like a screen replacement which is probably about $200 to $250.
