Hey folks.

Parents-in-law have two Dell Latitude laptops. One of these stopped charging properly. We tried swapping the batteries between the two laptops as well as swapping the external power adapters, with same non-charging result. The blue LED on the power adapter lights up, but the battery icon in the system tray doesn't show anything plugged in.

A battery application shows the batteries are in actually good shape, with about 85% total capacity, even after a few years of use.

Is there a good place for laptop repairs in Wellington you'd recommend?

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. If you use my Quic signup you can also use the code R570394EKGIZ8 for free setup. Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

don't keep you hopes too high. i took my dell to the Dunedin office and the polite lady only has one line she could say: "sorry we don't repair dell". no matter what i asked her, that was the answer! very well trained!

You need a laptop repairer who can do component level SMD repairs on the motherboard. Many dont and just board swap $$$$$$$$$$$$$ (incl where I used to work)

I'm pretty sure that the authorised service agent in New Zealand is Unisys. I had a similar charging issue a couple of years ago and dropped it off to Unisys House in Boulcott Street (and having just googled it, there don't seem to be any other obvious contenders in that building).

For what it's worth, they ended up fixing my issue for free, even though the notebook was out of warranty and I ended up spending some time on the phone talking to Malaysia about New Zealand's Consumer Guarantees Act.

Yes, Unisys does Dell servicing - the same tech visited us a couple of times when we had problems with our Dell Zino HD a few years back. But these laptops are way out of warranty now...

How far out of warranty? I bought mine in October 2010 and had it fixed in January 2013 (so a bit over two years old).

Pretty far I think. I would have to check. Unfortunately Dell website is a mess.

FYI for those in Auckland:
I have Texas Instrument tools/software enabling me to read/write into the battery management system when it is not connected to the laptop and see all the data - who and when manufactured, number of cycles, Full Charge Capacity, Remaining Capacity, unbalance if any etc.
Common situation with recent laptop packs is:
Modules inside are in perfect condition - e.g. could be 80-90-even saw 100% of design capacity but for unknown reason the chips inside the pack (they are made by TI in alsmost all laptop brands nowadays) had recorded so called PF (permanent fault) - unerasable as chips are frequently sealed from rewrite. As you imagine - can not be [easily] repaired. Battery cases in many situtions need to be opened to get access to burnt fuses (also happens). I am not in business of reparing laptop batteries but I can diagnose those without laptop.

That is how I've got hips of still good Li-Ion modules.
As for the software to diagnose battery - ther is DOS command and few aftermarket programs which give a lot of good info...
