Can't help with your laptop but it is usually not difficult to get photos and other data off the drive, assuming the drive is not the problem. I don't know this specific machine but drives are usually easy to remove. If you have another computer you ought to be able to read the drive as a data drive via a USB port. USB enclosures are cheap on Trade Me and you should be able to find a suitable one for a few dollars.

Can't say for sure without testing but it does sound like the old DV6 GPU fault and if so wouldn't be worth fixing, getting you data off should be pretty simple though.

This is not difficult but it does take a little technical know-how. If you don't know how to go about it, you probably shouldn't try. You are better off taking the laptop to a repair shop, and asking them to remove the drive for you. Assuming the drive is not damaged in any way, You could then ask them to install it in a USB enclosure for you. You can also have them copy the data you want to another drive or computer, but if the drive is not damaged, the cheapest solution might be just to put it in a USB enclosure. This lets you use the drive as an external USB drive so you can just plug it into another computer. You won't be able to use any applications on it, so you can delete those to free up space and just keep the folders with your photos and any other data you want. A suitable USB enclosure can be found on Trade Me for as little as $20 or $30 or so but if you don't know what you are doing you might want to ask for expert help with that as well.
