I am using a Surface Pro 3 and it's showing signs of something I suspect is a hardware fault...

Pushing the power button from completely off sometimes takes ten minutes to show the Windows login screen, with most of this time (say nine minutes 45 seconds) in the "Surface" logo. Once it starts it works for a few minutes before it shows a BSOD. The bugcheck is 0x0000009f (0x0000000000000003, 0xffffe000b0113290, 0xffffd0002ce9b960, 0xffffe000b09c0810) "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE".

After this restart it will work ok for the rest of the time it's on. If I dare to shutdown then the process happens again.

It's obviously under warranty but seriously not happy at the prospect of having to get a new machine and reinstalling stuff...

No idea but if disabling sleep/hibernation etc 'fix' it, that might give you more time.

Anything interesting in event logs? There are a fair number of google results indicating WiFi drivers. Will disabling the adaptor make any difference?

Nothing in the logs. Tried disabling hibernation and no difference.

I'd say a hardware error - time to return the machine for replacement. It's a business device, so this will be taken care of.

It is probably a driver problem.

Try a Windows Update.

This is a Surface out of box with Windows Update applied. I am more inclined to put this as a hardware problem unless the dump shows differently.

ideally you would backup image it, then restore it to stock to see if the problem still occurs.

any difference in or out of dock?

Any reason you couldn't take a image backup of it and restore that to the new hardware, very little downtime reinstalling your apps etc that way.  When the new device comes, image that pretty much vanilla in case the problem IS software.

Before diagnostic restore maybe check the update manager for this recent one:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3029803

If it is a new system maybe you don't have updates for your updates yet ; )

A full BSoD dump will tell you which driver was running at the time.

I'd try updating that driver individually.

I have no idea how Microsoft supply updated drivers for Surface. Do they have separate downloads or is it only via Windows Update?

It could be hardware. But, I wouldn't assume it. Up to you though.

Thank you folks for comments - swapped docking stations and it starts ok 100% of the time now. Shutdown/Power on ten times this morning and all without fail.
