Help.

I have conected my laptop vaio fz-15g win.vista.home.prem to a 42"LCD phillips 42PFL7422 with an HDMI cable.

Picture is perfect.  No audio.

Laptop is configuerd to use HDMI out for picture and sound.   Tried ALL soundcard settings and new/latest drivers.  Even from 4th party sites, different manufactors altogether...

When running, The audio out on the laptop VOLUME LEVEL control has bars rising falling etc...

I _have_ bastardised the Nivida 8400mgt driver to get forceware to run.
Could this effect the HDMI audio passthru?

Please no suggestion to connect it to another HDMI source, I just don't have one.  Unless I take the lappy to someone else's house. which is the next option.

Maybe I could rephrase that.

With the HDMI interface, does it integrate the sound and video at a software level?  Which process would control that?
The way I see it, The HDMI is hardware, fed DVI from the vid.card and audio stream from the soundcard.

I don't have any HDMI drivers, or even entries into the reg. about HDMI?

Should I be assessing the video card drivers now as the audio seems to be leaving the Codec fine.

My laptop has an HDMI port and when I first plugged it in I got picture and sound straight away. I wonder if it could be the HDMI cable that is faulty or the HDMI port on your laptop?

Yes, you can control the output resolution through software. Yes, the sound quality / settings via CONTROL PANEL --> SOUND.

I did not need any 3rd party software to do the above on Vista.

PS - eeek, laptops only use specific video drivers from the vendor (in your case, Sony).  If you tweaked with the driver, this will definitely affect the sound card drivers (compatibility).  The golden rule is never download a video driver other than the one posted on the vendor's website for laptops.

A quick Google search indivates there are plenty of people with 8400's encountering similair issues. When it comes to HDMI (and in particular their video card onboard audio) ATI seem to be a step ahead of NVidia at present.

Yeah, I have searched...
There are no other vaios with the same problem.

the problem is that with Vista You can only get Audio on Protected Video if the whole chain is HDCP. This means that either your Graphics card need to do the Audio bit (= HD2600 or HD2400, and upcoming HD3800), Or you need an Audio-card that delivers HDCP encoded Audio over digital link to the Graphics card. Actually, this should be the case with protected content with XP too, but with XP I can see it as possible to circumvent.

However, Unprotected content should play nice, but I am not sure about HDMI audio in that case. Vista might still demand an all HDCP-compatible line of circuitry for the Audio. I cannot say for sure./////////////////QUOTE

Question.
Is my sound card.   Sigmatel HD audio codec.  Built into the intel 965 chipset?   Should I be looking intel 965 updates for the HDCP problem?   Or maybe vista HDCP hax?

TA.
