Hi,
A while back ( not that long ago) someone posted having trouble with a single device on their home network being unable to connect but otherwise all the other devices would. Turns out their (laptop?) was running Windows 8.1 and there was a known issue with the provided telecom technicolor modem (which I think was being used for VDSL ) and Windows 8.1.

So I can't find the fairly recent thread now and I really need to know the model names of the modems involved as a friend of mine is having the same issue.

All devices at her house will connect via wifi and be able to browse the web but this one laptop won't. It WILL work via Ethernet at her house. Also, the same laptop will connect and function correctly via wifi at work.
This would seem to suggest the laptop is working correctly, just not with her modem.

Her ISP ran her through a bunch of attempts to fix the connection with no luck.

I'm wondering if she has one of the modems not compatible with Windows 8.1.

Was the issue only with wifi and Windows 8.1 with those modems or did it affect Ethernet as well? Because hers works with Ethernet...

I'd appreciate someone pointing out where that thread is. It was in an 'odd' category because initially the OP didn't know what the problem was.

the modem was the tg589vn v2 and it was a DNS issue with the modem sometimes not being able to resolve servers

there are a couple of things you can do:
ask spark for a new modem, one of the new hauwai ones
manually set the DNS server on your laptop, which is what i did
find the patch batch file for the modem and apply that

If it's a Technicolor modem, then yes this would probably explain the issue. Talk to Spark and explain the issue is a known one with their supplied Technicolor modem and could they please send out a replacement (usually an Huawei HG630b).

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Thanks very much.
I emailed my friend and she has the HG531sV1. So I guess that isn't it.

She says the laptop worked wirelessly before switching to Spark and getting this new modem.

I'm going to bring the laptop over to my place and confirm that it will connect to the internet via my wireless network but it was working wirelessly at work yesterday so I am guessing it will. (I am with SNAP, using a Fitzbox)

Assuming I confirm it works wirelessly at my house, any idea what the problem might be between her laptop and her own modem? I turned off the 'save power by turning this device off' setting off already while I saw her at work briefly in case that was it - it wasn't.

Previous provider's DNS manually entered in the NIC settings perhaps?

But wireless internet worked at workplace?

I'll look the wireless settings over in any case when  I get hold of the laptop.

Any more ideas? :)

Check the wireless security the lap top could be set for wep and the router for wpa or the other way round.
