I am using a Toshiba X200 with Windows Vista Ultimate.

Today when I turned on my computer everything seemed fine until after I put in my password to login.

My Documents folder is automatically opened and there is absolutely nothing (pitch black) behind it = no Windows Start button, no tool bar, no desktop icons... in fact, if I right click where the background is, nothing happens. Essentially, I only have My Documents open. The documents, music, videos etc all open fine.

Tested Safe Mode but still the same.

What is happening? Hope I don't have to reformat my laptop. Help! Thanks.

Looks like I am not alone - people on the net are complaining about the exact same issue! However, no solutions:(

Edit: Found the solution!

Go into:
"regedit"

Then...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Shell = Explorer.exe "C:\Windows\System32\JambanMu.com"

I changed it to
Shell = Explorer.exe

Apparently my system caught a trojan. I accidentally allowed the reg change when my anti-virus software alerted me before. Opps!

Did you turn UAC off?

I turned UAC off, its crazy and over bearing.

I'd be suprised if a serious PC user left it on.

I asked because UAC was off, and an antivirus warned about registry changes - and it was authorised.

So no surprise PCs get infected. It would happen on a Mac or any other OS. If a user is running as Administrator and authorises things...

I am not blaming one individual, but the way the interactions happen.

I did accidentally say yes to the warning, but the warning pretty much said something was being changed in IE - I thought, OK, maybe it is because of the newly installed software. Hmm, sometmes it is hard to know what is dangerous and what isn't.
