This has not been a good experience. My SP 4 i5 is completely dead and will not start up at all. I think I am taking it in to ask for a full refund. I'm really disappointed as I've been saving a very long time for it.

you could log a support call at https://myservice.surface.com

does the power light come on the charger when you plug it in?

Have you tried the troubleshooting steps at https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/warranty-service-and-recovery/surface-wont-turn-on?os=windows-10

specifically https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/warranty-service-and-recovery/surface-wont-turn-on-or-wake-from-sleep?os=windows-10

Take the time to follow Nathan's suggestions.

In my experience very few items fail so soon in their life span.  It's usually something the owner has done inadvertently and/or at least can fix quite easily themselves.  These fixes are much quicker and simpler than sending the item for a warranty return which in many cases isn't actually required.

Yeah what have you tried?
I was using a Surface Pro 3 that did something like this. Following the troubleshooting info got it going again (had to disconnect the type cover or something).

I got it working using the volume button trick but my main complaint has been the pen cutting out (there's more but that is the most recent problem.) I am actually in the shop right now trying to reproduce the problem, and of course the #$% thing now won't do it! It's constant at home. I mean #constant#.

I've already tried a full reset due to an earlier error code with updating, it's up to date, it has the regedit wifi hack (or else wifi is unusable) which is a known problem and work around for some access points; I was expecting some glitches but the pen is a deal breaker for me.

I was worried about it being the tablet itself but now I can't reproduce it in this shop environment; it really has me wondering what the heck is going on.

Thanks for the support guys, it's been frustrating.

I disabled sleep a few days ago, opting for hibernate due to the sleep issues these have.

I got the pen problem to reproduce in the shop- the pen just ceases to interact. You may as well be trying to write with a twig. It can be seconds to a half an hour before it starts to act up.

The Bluetooth button still works to launch Onenote. I can't get a AAAA battery anywhere local, I looked anywhere likely to have one. I'm going to have to order one online to see if a new battery fixes it.

I had the manager grab one of their pens and theirs worked when mine did not, so happily that narrows it down to the pen or the battery in it and not the PC.

If a new battery does not work the manager has offered to give me a new pen. He was very supportive.

So away I go to order a battery.

I'll give you an update when I learn anything new.

PB Tech, Dick Smiths, Bunnings etc all carry AAAA battery

Also most 9v batteries have 6 x AAAA inside them, if you're up for cracking one open

Thanks, local DS, Warehouse, Stationary Warehouse and Mitre 10 don't have them. I ordered from PB, with any luck they'll be here Tuesday.

For now I am going to go transplant corn in my garden. :p

Seems mind boggling that retailers selling SP4 shouldn't keep reasonable stock of batteries on hand. At the very least the manager could have given you HIS battery.

Noel Leeming didn't have 'em. New World? Never would have thought of that!
I have two now though. Probably enough to last me a couple years.

So, the pen is munted and is going back to the shop as soon as they email me to tell me the replacement they ordered is in.

Crack open a 9v battery. 6 AAAA inside

If you're desperate

I've got no idea why they're so hard to find now

When I lived in NZ I had bought them from bunnings, mitre10, DSE etc

Just an update. Shop finally got a new pen in after Christmas but this one also only works intermittently. I put a new battery in it. Does not seem to matter what program I am using at the time. I have tried various fixes I've seen online. Taking the battery out and putting it in again seems to get it going again but the pen quits so frequently it's not a practical solution.

I'm thinking of ringing Microsoft to see if they will send me another one.

Do any of you extensively use your pen and if so does yours work?

Is it possible I just got two duds in a row? It's really frustrating.

edit:I take it back, now taking the battery out doesn't work either.

Have you tried using the replacement pens given to you on other SP4s in store?
