Basically I'm looking for a laptop.

I already own a multitude of licences for winXP vista (including ultimate) as well as using Ubuntu in a majority of cases.

I want to purchase a laptop but I don't want to pay the built in fee for another copy of windows.

also the laptops that come loaded with linux don't have enough grunt.

This isn't a "I don't want a windows laptop" this is a "I don't want to have yet another licence for windows that is useless to me"

I need the following in a laptop also,

min 15" screen,
min sata 250gb, prefer 2x sata (anysize)
1gb upgradable to 2
250mb NVIDIA  graphics.
1.8ghz dual core Intel cpu.
Wireless N.

anything else is negligible,

anyone got any ideas?

I don't think you are able to purchase one without an OS from the retail market.

I know at one stage in Australia they stated that you had to show the price of windows and you had to provide the option of not supplying it with the pc.

Oh well, looks like it'll just be a dell inspiron.

Dick Smith used to sell laptops with linux loaded - which I guess you wouldn't be paying for.
Not sure if they still do or indeed if the laptops are any good.

They still have those laptops - saw one yesterday. They are good and I heard of people who got them to run Windows.

yeah they would be great, if they had nvidia graphics and a dual core cpu (for the additional cost obviously)

Can't do order a Dell computer with Freedos? Do you need totally OS clean or would a free OS like ubuntu be a prob? Cos we all know about Dell shipping with Ubuntu.

You can always go second hand too. Trademe computer arent all bad.

I got in touch with dell, and whilst they weren't able to offer me a machine with the specs I wanted without vista, they did come through with a good discount to "sweeten the deal"

so two thumbs up to dell for actually giving a damn.

if Anyone wants to speak with the person I delt with, who was very patient and helpful (being a geek I submitted a _lot_ of options before finally deciding)

let me know

For some reason I am reminded of my cat walking around in circles for 2 minutes before she finally lies down in a ball & goes to sleep Wink

Did Dell run you through a bunch of models and specs/options on the phone with you?

some bulk/specialist computer stores sometimes sell Upgrade computers that have no OS, and you can just either transfer your OS and files over or put on a new OS (like what you want to do) however last time i looked the store (PB tech) only had desktops for sale that way, but that may now be different

That computer that freitasm linked to looked amazing. Only $100 more than the EEE too. Makes me feel not so cool about my EEE now :/

How do you think this sucker would handle Win XP? Also whats the deal with the $99 cash back offer they have on the DSE site? Do Acer give you $99 into your account or is it store credit? And also DSE site says price reflects 10% discount? Whats the deal with this?
