I'm using a Turion 64 MK-36 (2.0GHz, just the single core) on my laptop and it's not really the fast processor like the Core 2's or anything, but does allow me to get through most work easily (although I've only got 512 MB RAM, so I can't say much about system performance really)

There are also the Turion 64 X2s which are dual-core, but the AMD Turion 64 Mobile Processor range doesn't seem to get a lot of attention compared to the Pentium Dual-Core or Core 2's.

Go for it.

If you don't specifically know you need the gruntiest CPU you can possibly afford, then chances are that you will be just fine with the AMD. My last AMD was a Turion 2.0GHz single core. It was great in my laptop with 1GB ram and XP flew on it.

Actually I also have a Sempron 3400+ desktop, with 1.75GB of RAM, and XP, and its a sluggish. I wouldn't buy a Sempron again. (It was cheap).

I am using an Acer Ferrari 5000, based on an AMD Turion 64 x2 (dual core), at 2.0 GHz, 2 GB RAM and 160 HDD. Its Vista Experience Index is 4.8, better than most laptops I checked around at Dick Smith last week and other places. I use it as a desktop replacement, because it's that good.
