  • Do you mean laptop?
  • All of mine do (except my eeePC).
  • eeePC permanently underclocks by 300MHz, proabably to save battery, can be hacked to run at full speed.
  • Some previous laptops of mine have had dynamically changing speeds to help save battery life too.
  • 2GB is a measure of data storage. I have a 2GB USB thumb drive. It rocks.
  • Plz dnt use txt speak.
  • Whats 'the situation' ? You don't like the battery efficiency of your laptop?

You are probably thinking of 2 GHz (gigahertz) not 2 GB (gigabytes).

As for "full speed", all laptops run at full speed depending on your configuration. If you are using Windows then in the Power applet you will have options to make the battery run at certain % of speed when plugged in or running on batteries.

Of course, the faster the CPU the shorter is the battery life. You adjust it as you wish. You can also create power configurations and switch those when you want.

Other than this, there's no "limits" in speed...

Can I crack a Windows Vista joke or have I used up my quota for this month?

Typically you just want to disable the power-saving to make a laptop run at full speed. At least I would say thats the short, one-line answer. Laptops are just PCs basically but the CPUs / hardware are all geared towards power saving.

Nothing to do with power. But yes, it does - but only when the memory is needed, for example for 3D rendering. Otherwise the memory is free.

not quite..

this slowdown you talk about is probably just ACPI CPU C-state power management. you cannot turn this off, the feature is implemented in hardware and controlled by the state of your power input (ie, on battery or on mains). to speed things up: plug into AC/DC/mains-supply and the CPU will operate in C-1, C-0 mode. another way is to change WIndow's HAL to non-ACPI (ie safe mode) so power management features will not be used, bad idea though.

if you are refering to CPU throttling and basic power management features, set the power profile to run at 'full power' in control panel

What happened to my post?

I agree to both power management and memory variance.

I was putting another note up about shared memory.

Geekzone "eats" posts every so often. It's a long-standing problem.

CTRL-A then CTRL-C before clicking POST REPLY will save the post into the Windows Clipboard in case GZ eats it. If that happens, you just paste it back in again and Re-POST. I've never had it happen twice in a row, but every so often it happens the first time.

In fact it just happened to me now...  Better luck this time!

How come it doesn't do it for me? Do you guys have the "automatic login" checkbox set?

Yep, sure do Smile

I might also mention that another Forum where I spend a bit of time used to have this problem.  A few weeks back the owner changed to:

and the problem has completely gone Cool

The problem with my post was that someone completely edited it (#114659) without leaving a note (Short edits are fine by me, but this one screwed my reply up)

I receive an email for each post and haven't seen any edits on that reply.

All I said in the post was something along the lines of:

Quite a lot of laptops have shared memory with graphics.

Geekzone used to eat my posts often, though hasn't lately. I always have automatic login checked.
