I have a trackpad issue that is driving me to distraction. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. I am also prepared to pay for repair if it actually fixes the problem.

I have an Acer Aspire V3-112P Notebook that I bought from America. I imported it because I could not find the same model here. I chose this computer after extensive research. It was the only one within my budget that had all the features I wanted and I chose it for a reason, so please, no unhelpful disparaging comments about Acer quality. This is the machine I have and it is the one I need to get fixed.

Not long after I got it, the trackpad started acting up. At first it didn’t happen often, and because the computer came from the USA, I didn’t want to get involved in warranty issues. For a long time the problem wasn’t too bad and I decided to live with it. Occasionally the trackpad would just suddenly stop responding. No cursor movement and no mouse clicks. Rebooting fixed it.

Over time it has gradually gotten worse. Now it freezes several times a day, sometimes several times an hour. I have tried different things but the only thing that fixes it is rebooting. After that it works normally again until it freezes. The computer came with Windows 8.1 installed, which I later upgraded to Windows 10. It has the latest updates. The trackpad issue has existed with both OS versions.

I assume (don’t really know) that this is a driver problem rather than a hardware one. I think this because of some things I have read on Acer forums and because rebooting always fixes it. I have checked the Acer site for driver updates but there aren’t any. I don’t know what else to do.

Sometimes (not always), the cursor behaves erratically before it freezes. It may make a few random movements. Or it may partially freeze, then work briefly again before completely freezing. I cannot find any pattern to the freezing. It seems to be completely random, not affected by any software I am using or any actions I am performing. Sometimes it happens more than once within a few minutes, sometimes it goes hours without a problem (though it is getting more frequent). It does not affect the keyboard or touchscreen so I can continue using the computer. An external USB mouse also works.

There are two touchpad drivers for this model on the Acer site. I think my touchpad must be the Synaptics one because of the reduced settings it offers. A Synaptics HID device is also listed under Human Interface Devices on my machine, as well as HID-compliant touch pad and other devices. Under mice it only lists HID-compliant mouse.

Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

Is Acer support able to offer any insight?

This was happening to one of my Alienware laptops on the standard up-to-date build of Windows 10 - found no solution. The Touchpad would always act up after awaking from sleep. In the end I went onto the slow ring insider builds and that fixed it for me.

Not really. I just got the standard boilerplate bla bla about reinstalling the driver and having the computer serviced under warranty. Acer support doesn't seem to address issues like this very well unless they are extremely widespread and well-known, and maybe not even then. The computer would have to be completely dead before I would return it for servicing. This is an intermittent problem, though it is becoming worse, and I am afraid if I did send the machine away, even if only to Auckland, some bored tech would turn it on once, say hey that works fine, sign it off and return it to me with nothing changed. And if I had to return it to America there are all the nightmares with the battery. So if I can't get it fixed locally I am just stuck.

I am generally quick to blame Windows for anything that goes wrong but this problem has existed with 8.1 as well as the various 10 versions. I'm not even close to being an expert on this but it doesn't feel like an OS issue to me.

Does Acer not have a worldwide warranty? (ie. can you not get it fixed here?)

I'd say it needs a new trackpad.

I looked into it before but at the least I would have to send the computer to Auckland. It is not my first choice.

what is the make/model/version of the driver in device manager?

Was it a clean Win10 install or upgrade from 8.1?

I have had many weird and wonderful driver-related issues over the years and nearly all have been resolved with a clean fresh and sparkly install. And it's much easier than it used to be to reinstall windows, what with the internet and all.

The mouse driver just says HID-compliant mouse. Driver files are Mouclass.sys & Mouhid.sys. The touchpad says HID-compliant touchpad, no driver files needed or loaded. There are several other Human Interface Devices, Vendor-defined, I2c HID, Microsoft Input Configuration, USB input device. I don't know what these actually do. It all looks like generic stuff to me. I don't see any make/model/version numbers under Device Manager.

This was an update install from Windows 8.1. I don't know a lot about technical computer stuff from recent years, but I do know a fair bit from the old days and drivers were the bugbear of that time. I decided on an upgrade instead of a clean install because I was terrified of not being able to find correct drivers for this computer, which was new, and I figured I could always roll back. However, I notice that there is now a Win 10 section for it on the Acer site so hopefully that would no longer be an issue. As I previously stated, the trackpad problem has existed under both 8.1 and Win 10 so I don't know if a clean install would make any difference there, but I am willing to try anything that makes sense.
