Hey there,

Just wondering if anyone can tell me how much I can upgrade the ram in my Compaq V6302AU laptop? It has 1 gb (or 958 mb) currently. I have searched all the manuals I have as well as the internet for info and couldn't find anything that helps

Thanks

Modern laptop like that should be absolutely fine with 2 x 1024MB (2GB) and probably even 2 x 2048MB (4GB)

DDR2 667MHz PC5300. I think max ram for that model is quoted as 2GB.

4GB MIGHT work but generally anything over 3GB in a Windows desktop OS is wasted anyway.

Open your laptop RAM cover first and see if you have 1x1GB or 2x512MB. If the latter, you will have to throw both away (or sell) to upgrade to 2GB. If the former, then you will be able to add just 1x1GB.

Either way, its a pretty cheap upgrade.

Find someone to sell you Simpletech RAM fro DUO. Its dirt cheap, doesn't void HP warranty, and has a lifetime forward replacement warranty.

Hi,
Try a handy little programme called cpuz (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php). Click on the Memory and SPD tabs.  The SPD tab will state what type of memory your system has at the moment.
Message back any questions.

Made an account just to post a reply to this :D
It can take up to 1024MB per slot, and has 2 slots. I learnt this the hard way, when I got a 2GB DDR2 stick cheap, and found out I couldn't use it (ended up swapping it for a 1GB stick). Right now I have 1x512 and 1x1GB in the lappie and I have noticed an improvement (mostly when gaming) but the system still shows it as having 1GB total. I presume its in the registry or something, but I'm not too bothered since I can tell it's being used. Oh and I have a V6302AU as well ;)

Thanks for that, I had already pulled the cover off the back and found that its got 2 x 512mb sticks. So i figured i need to get my hands on 2 x 1gb ones.. the bigger the better right? Wink

The bios could be dynamically adjsting the amount of RAM it is sharing with the video card/accelerator.

Either way I'm not too bothered. As soon as I upgraded RAM I changed the amount of memory shared with the geforce go 6150 from 64mb to 128mb, not sure if that would be affecting it.
