So not having endless supplies of cash I need to make a decision.

Just sold my 2014 macbook. I really enjoyed using a macbook so would like to replace it.

However recently saw a mates 5k imac Woh!!! amazing quality.

Q1. Can I, as close as possible recreate a imac 5k with a macbook and a Lg Ultrafine monitor (I saw this suggested somewhere as a 5k alternative)?

a. If so which macbook do i need to do so ?

Any MacBook or MacBook Pro will drive a 5K monitor as long as it supports Thunderbolt 3. You might need a MacBook Pro to drive more than 1 5K monitor.

Is that what you are talking about?

That's Thunderbolt 3 over USB C. The previous Thunderbolt 3 ports will also work.

My setup is a Macbook Air for when I am on the go, and an iMac 5K at the home office. Would not exchange it for a Macbook Pro with external screen.

Mind you, the new LG screen that you can use with the new 2017 USB-C Macbook Pros might not be a horrible choice. See iMores article about the choice between iMac and LG/Macbook

I'm rocking a 2017 MBP and the LG5K here (have been for 2-3 weeks) and while I absolutely love the quality of the display, there are some major bugs (I'm talking forced reboots every day, macOS crashes every time you open the lid on the MBP while connected, grey screen of death etc.) that need to be ironed out via software update.
