The cpu fan on our HP pavilion DV6 has failed. Are there generics, or am i going to have to track down a specific part?

Not generic.

You need to identify the specific model of DV6, find it's maintenance guide, find the part number, acquire the part.

It can be a bit of a pain, for example http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01744837.pdf is for one type of DV6, I suspect there are others. For that Manual, there are two types of fan assembly depending on if your graphics card has shared or discrete RAM.
