Hi folks

My Toshiba Satellite is currently having intermittent sound issues. This has become a serious pain in my ass as I am a heavy listener of music and watcher of tv series streaming.

Around a year ago the keyboard buttons for volume control stopped working, around the time of Windows 10 being downloaded. Didn't find that a major issue, so I ignored it and adjusted the volume control via the volume mixer.

Then afterwards (Not sure how long after) the speakers stopped working too. Also didn't find that to be a major issue as I mostly use headphones.

Over the last 6 months or so, a static, screeching kinda sound starting coming from the main inbuilt speakers, even though they do not work with audio. Even if I disable the speakers. This can happen randomly throughout my usage but it mostly occurs on start-up. Then the static hissing sound goes away. Sometimes it interferes with headphone usage. I get the hissing in my headphones, and not long afterwards the sound stops completely, or it randomly switches back and forth from headphones to speakers. I have searched the internet, tried disabling Realtek, uninstaling Realtek, changing settings etc and the issue is seemingly fixed but after time Realtek takes over and the issues start again.

Also note, my battery life is not what it used to be so the charger is plugged in most of the time. Just thought I'd note that.

I'm not overly savvy with hardware or drivers but I can understand some of the lingo and can follow instructions reasonably well. Any feedback would be helpful and much appreciated.

Cheers

Nikki

Sounds like a driver problem - I'm surprised you found no solution on the internet.

I'd first try a bunch of alternate sound card drivers (original/older/latest/generic etc).

If you have a spare 2.5" HDD laying around/available, you could temporarily fit that and see if fresh install of windows solves the issue. If you don't have anything important on C: you could do a fresh install without changing HDD -  if it is you only computer, be sure to download all the necessary drivers from the Toshiba site first (especially network card drivers).

A model number would be helpful.

Edit: Sorry, re-read what you said and my initial answer was not relevant.

Thanks for your reply tripper.

I've tried other compatible drivers, it works only for a day or so then problem comes back. Could be because Realtek takes over? I've read how to disable it permanently but it doesn't seem to last. I've also tried a re-install, twice. Both times the issue came back almost instantly. The only break I get is when I have disabled and uninstalled Realtek. I guess Windows updates keep re-installing it undecided

Model number is C50D-A
