Am idly considering getting one of these for / with no1 son who is studying architecture soon (both $1699 which might be too much anyway)...

Maybe that's more of an excuse than a reason, but anyway, think they'd work as a general use laptop with a bit of grunt (not particularly for gaming actually) ?

Far as I can see they're both quite decent, Asus has better screen, Dell significantly better battery life. Not as portable as the 13.3inch types but he's young and fit.

Definitely want the 1050Ti 4GB and 16GB ram. A HDD and SSD if he is using CAD..

If your son is going to be a budding architect, and use CAD programs would it not be better for something that works with a pen and is adaptable? Thinking a 2 in 1 would be good, Microsoft Surface 2017 version or Lenova Thinkpad Yoga?

Coil - pretty much what I was thinking. Hopefully it wouldn't be out of date too soon with a bit of grunt.

Djrm - haven't been able to find any requirements yet. The uni said if your thinking of buying a laptop contact us for requirements, which I have, but they haven't got back to me yet. Might be more for general use and use uni stuff for cad type things. Hopefully they'll let me know. Not sure about Surface, seems to have a bit of a rep for reliability (or lack of). will have a look at Yoga. He was idly looking at MacBook Air as well.

Also probably depends on the CAD software that they use and if it's Windows only.

True. Actually no1 son has decided, as he's paying half, he's getting the Dell. So we ordered it. Highly unusual as we normally prevaricate about these things like there's no tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice (even from a ManU fan). Go Klopp (I was born there, its allowed). No comments about Swansea please...(adds metaphorical smiley emoji here but can't be bothered).

Don't buy a macbook air.....

Hope you're happy with the dell, There is better value out there and cooling performance but all good..
Just do not get the extended care crap, we have the CGA :)

Hope it works out. There's always something out there thats better somehow, but as I think I mentioned, I can take forever to come to a decision. so this time we're going for it...

didn't do the extended care thing. but did get a years accidental damage. Thinking about it, guess that would come under household insurance anyway (maybe, I think, bearing in mind the excess) but its done now.

Two Dell 7567's on the factory outlet at the moment (unless they've already sold).

i7-7700HQ, 16GB ram, 256 SSD and 1TB HDD, GTX1050Ti 4GB for $1200.

Those have already sold out unfortunately, I myself tried to get one of them.

Instead i got the new version 7577 with the 1060 max GQ from the US store for $784 USD with various coupons and once it arrives I'll get the international warranty and transfer the licenses to the NZ dell store.

So I'm assuming after youpost and customs It will cost me about $1300

Even the outlet in the States has some great prices on the 4K screen models.

Also you can get some good deals through Amazon, they also do the duty calculation and charge you on their end so you don't need to do it once it comes to NZ.

Make sure whatever you are looking at has option for international warranty which you can find most of the tme in the Q and A section.

Not been brave enough to buy anything expensive overseas, the whole gst thing puts me off (though like you say Amazon should take care of it). Never even thought about international warranties though. Also, with laptops, always wondered about whether the wifi would work here (maybe thats just for routers...). And no probs with getting the associated batteries transported here ?
