Hey All Just wanting to double check, I'm planning on upgrading my old Sony Vaio ssd from a 128GB (Samsung MZHPU128HCGM-00000) to something larger.. Just wanting to check that the Samsung evo plus will do the trick? https://camelcamelcamel.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S1T0B/product/B07MFZY2F2.

 

Anyone see something I'm missing?

Old one doesnt mention NVMe, the samsung 970 definatly is. Check the UEFI supports NVMe drives, and be prepared to do a fresh install ratehr than a clone since most paths suggested for cloning from an AHCI drive over to NVMe seem to be total BS and not work and just suggest paid software which also doesnt work.

Grab something like the Samsung 860 EVO MZ-N6E250BW 250GB. It's Sata rather than NVME.

How are you plugging the M.2 drive? I added a PCIE M.2 adapter to my desktop (actually an HPE ML110 server), cloned the original SATA SSD to the M.2, changed the boot device and it just worked... That's how I reviewed the Crucial P1 here - and this is my day-to-day desktop.

 

Also note that using PCIE you will get many times the SATA performance - from my review:

 

 

Sequential read test of 1GB file yeld a 1600 MB/s which is very close to the rated speed, while a sequential write test was a lot lower than quoted, 786 MB/s. Interestingly the 4k IOPS (64 threads) was pretty much exactly what the specs promised, with 166500 Read IOPS and 246000 Write IOPS results.

 

Now compare this with the original SSD that gives me 181 MB/s (Read) and 152 MB/s (Write) results (44400 Read IOPS, 37350 Write IOPS) and you will understand why I said the Crucial P1 made such a difference on my desktop performance. Thoroughly recommended upgrade - covering both storage space and performance results requirements.

 

 

 

 

Edit: sorry, just saw it's a laptop but the P1 recommendation stands as a good M.2 drive.

So looking at images of the old drive I think I need

 

PCIe X4

 

m key

 

NOT NVMe (no support in BIOS and attempts to inject it have failed)

 

 

Ideally a minimum of 512GB,

 

 

Will the SATA drive (like the 860 linked above) work given it is B+M key?

I've decided to buy a replacement XP941 512GB drive instead of hoping for the best with NVMe in the BIOS or a SATA drive working (which is a 50% reduction in read and write speeds as well)
