I have a Dell precision M4700 laptop (CAD workstation), with a AMD M7700 professional graphics card that can no longer be detected.

This forces me across to the integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics. Wouldn't be a huge issue as I now rarely do graphics intensive stuff on my personal laptop, but it seems that only the M7700 runs the display-port's. I have a nice 1440p 27" monitor, so using the laptops screen while I am at my desk sucks in comparison.

Anybody know how to diagnose a failed graphics board so I can be comfortable to order another off ebay?

Have managed to get the graphics card back live twice. First time (for 10mins or so) by updating the bios (subsequent update didn't get it back, bios is now current). Second time was then I physically removed the graphics card, then reseated (takes about 30mins of dismantling to get to it).

I assume I could just drop in a new card like this if the graphics board is faulty?

Have you researched or pulled the laptop apart so you can see it has the same pin connector?
If it’s only us$50 like on eBay seems it would just be worth trying

Have you run the Dell diagnostics - press F12 at start up. It can be very effective.

Have you gone into the BIOS and disabled Switchable graphics?

Have run dell diagnosis, passes both graphics card tests, unclear if it was testing th m7700 or the Intel HD 4000.

Have tried both states for nvidia optimus in the Bios, currently set to off.

Can upload photos if it is of any value.

Graphic card in my laptop is the AMD firepro M4000, not M7700 as stated above. Have now worked out the graphics board in the ebay link is physically too big to fit in my laptop.

My laptop has a MXM 3.0A graphic card slot, and there are a wide range graphic cards on ebay that suit. Might try the Quatro K2000M

Still haven't been able to diagnose if the graphic card is faulty, but may well be cheaper to try a new graphics card than to have it professionally diagnosed.

There is a technique where the graphics chip needs to be heated using a heat gun and this re-seats the graphics chip. Could be worth a try but often the fault will return.

Sounds a bit much for me. Removing the graphics card from my laptop was about my diy limit.

Have ordered a replacement graphics card, a Nvidia Quadro K2000M this time.
