Hi, i just brought a laptop from USA like 2 weeks ago and i thought i would do a disk defragment and its still going after 6hours,The harddrive is 250gb and it has 4gb ram, should it be taking this long only after a couple weeks of owning it,i have hardly downloaded anything onto the hard drive or saved anything on there.
There are lots of things that influence this - OS, amount of data already there, amount of free space, type of defragmentation (defragment to best performance level or defragment all files), and so on.
It's really hard to say but the first time you defragment a drive it can take quite long time. Mainly because most defragmentation is running in low priority and will stop if the drive is used - so if you are working at the same time it will take longer, and so on.
Also if this is a new drive and you have something like Google Desktop Search or Windows Search enabled then it is also indexing things in the background, so everything contributes...
Theres this app called smartdefrag which continously defrags your pc (and if you like can also re-organise files for performance) while the computer is idle. Works very well and even better is freeware :) Its also kind on laptops with settings to not defrag while on battery source.
