So I am restoring a laptop for a family member and it needs a new cooling fan, you can hear it struggle when it goes, apparently according to uncle google the bearings are worn out, so I am looking for the following part for a Toshiba laptop TOSHIBA A000388720, and I found it here, https://store.emprgroup.co.nz/p-394936-a000388720.aspx?

According to them the justification for the price is that it's a "genuine Toshiba part" but I think even if it was (not that it holds much weight anyways) how can it be justified to cost that much?

I have been able to find it on ebay as well but irritatingly it still comes to around $100 with shipping. I was able to find it from a website in Portugal but they have no stock, and it came to $50 which I think is reasonable.

How old is the laptop ? If its an older model, then pricing is probably right, demand + availability = $$$

Empr isn't cheap, but they often have stock for years after it's not available elsewhere. Certainly they appear to be the only place in NZ that has one.. Also worth noting the ebay ones are also refurbished, rather than new.. I did find a place in Aussie with new stock for AUD$99 but by the time you pay for the shipping it's not that shy of Empr.

Given it's a older consumer grade laptop rather than a business one, and it looks like it may well have been primarily an au/nz model at that, I'm somewhat amazed parts are available at all. One possible cheaper option might be to try and see if you can just get a fan part number and replace that rather than the entire assembly.

It's about 4 / 5 years old, 5th gen i7

Yeah does seem to be a AU/NZ specific model, it's a Toshiba P50-C, the model number I have is on the actual fan, I have looked for others but can't find any, I'm thinking of getting sewing machine oil and applied it to the fan for now and see how that goes, I know it's not a permanent fix but who knows might actually fix the problem no matter how small of a chance that is.

Silicon or silicon grease will last longer imo and less messy.

I'd ask some local repairers if they have a similar enough fan.

Also look for a donor laptop.

If you put together a $2000 laptop out of genuine replacement parts, it'll probably cost you $20,000.

We had a user munt the keyboard on a new HP G5 lappie. The quote from HP to replace the keyboard was $20 less than what we paid for the entire laptop.

Yup... had user years ago break the screen on theirs - was an old laptop, so we quoted them for a new one. Nope, they went for a new screen which cost 85% of the quote for a new laptop.

Think they just didn't want to pay us for doing the software build (which only consisted of setting up email and MYOB, so probably 30mins tops).

Genuine Spare parts allways cost more than they are worth.
Same with brand name PC's genuine replacement PSU costing $200 for a $40 part
Same with genuine parts for cars .

It actually looks like theres a fair bit included with that part, its not just a fan.
Is an old laptop worth the cost of $200 for the fan unit ?
