Does anybody here use a Lenovo E490s? I am looking at one for my son as a school BYOD for next year. Currently 40% off direct from Lenovo which seems a good deal. However some reviews complain about poor screen brightness and getting hot causing the CPU to slow. I am looking for someone to provide some first hand information.

I am still using an old Thinkpad T410 and like them for reliability and repairability but I am not familiar with how good or bad the E series might be.

Found this on reddit from 6 months ago....

got the lenovo e490s with i5 and 8gb ram. Battery runs 4 to 5 hrs under light to medium load. After undervolting it runs 5 to 6 hrs. But this laptop does thermal throttle even after undervolting. Keyboard does feel just a little warm under normal use.

But other then those shortcomings. It handles dozen of tabs with spotify well; it doesnt really have any performance issues. Im quite content with my purchase. The build quality is quite good but the edges are quite sharp so resting your wrist on the edges does become uncomfortable. I would suggest getting the lenovo e490, which although is a bit thicker and heavier, might give a better thermal and overall performance.

Thanks. The technical specs are pretty much the same for both with the Lenovo site listing the following battery life with usual qualifiers.

Battery Life 1

Up to 11.5 hours
