Hi team

Looked but no thread similar post Covid anyway.

Out of these two;

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKASU512037/ASUS-ROG-Strix-G15-G512LV-HN037T-RTX-2060-Gaming-L

or

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKHNB151059/HP-Omen-15-RTX-2060-Gaming-Laptop-156-FHD-144Hz-Sc

The Omen has $250 cashback at the moment so these two are within $100 of each other.

Going to move on from my desktop and 27" screen - more social being able to use a laptop in a shared living area and also save some space in our tiny house by getting rid of our 'office'.

Current desktop is i5-3570k, 16GB Ram, GTX660Ti, 512GB SSD + 11TB hard drives so the laptop should be a good replacement (apart from storage space).

Hoping to buy tonight 😁

Cheers.

They are pretty damn similar and decent brands. I'd go with the Asus for the 2 year vs 1 year warranty if nothing else.

HP make good quality, robust laptops, Probook and Elitebook. Unsure what their gaming laptops are like. It might be worth having a look at these in person if possible.

Excellent thanks - another option to consider.

Been also considering whether I should be going Ryzen 7 4800H - seems to benchmark well against the i7-10750H.

Either of those two would be fine. I don't really like HP Consumer grade stuff. This is a step up on the Pavillions etc. HP have a local presence, and possibly a better warranty.  I'd probably pay the extra $100 and buy the HP.

I'd take either of those before I'd take the Infinity. Spec is impressive for the price, but as far as I know they don't have a proper local presence and you are going to be pretty reliant on the retailer for warranty I suspect.

Business laptops I would agree with that, but things must have changed, because that certainly never used to be the case with their consumer laptops.

Rather than make a quick decision last night I think I'll do some more research around the Ryzen CPU's - they seem to go along alright in benchmarks.

Now added this to the mix;

I posted this deal yesterday on Cheapies

Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop, i7-10750H, NVIDIA RTX 2060 6GB, IPS 15.6 FHD 144Hz, 512GB NVME US$1199.99 (~NZ$2306.12 Shipped) @ Amazon US

Probably not going to be your 1st choice considering it's off Amazon, but good to see what's on offer overseas and the comment section might be helpful.

Edit* That Asus Tuf FA506 you linked to looks nice. Seems to be a popular laptop in Australia.

Just beware that gaming laptops when actually gaming are quite noisy, and typically get very hot so having it on your lap will get uncomfortable quick.

Bought the little brother of this one from PB a couple of months ago, has not long come back from a warranty repair which took a month... the CPU fan was staying on 24/7 and the GPU fan developed a click, both fans since replaced and now working a ok. As another poster has mentioned, loud it is when you are gaming. My one as a lower spec cpu/gpu but has played every game I've tried so far with ease. Screen is good quality, speakers are reasonably loud. Keyboard has good feedback. Not a fan of the track pad but who uses them on a gaming laptop?

I can't say I'd ever recommend Acer.

Thanks all for your input.

After reading some reviews it would appear (as has been mentioned here) that perhaps the fan noise and heat is something I want to avoid.

I am a very (very) occasional gamer with a large steam library of mainly older games (nothing from the last two years that I can think of) and wonder if something a bit lower specd (especially in the graphics) would be more suitable, otherwise being able to dial back the noise and heat for day to day use.

Ideally I still want a decent CPU, 16GB ram and a speedy system drive, so maybe better me chucking the $$ into that than the graphics.

I'm probably a bit nervous compensating for losing my desktop......
