I have been donated a HP Envy M6 laptop to use with a charity group I am associated with. As it had been well used over the years and was full of apps and all sorts of stuff and consequently running very slow.

I decided to clean it up back to factory settings. Following instructions this process appeared to go very well right thru' to Windows reloading (all taking close on 2 hours).

However it now will not accept the original password to access the computer given to us by the previous owner. This worked fine before the reset. Consequently we are locked out and I am not able to contact the previous owner.

HELP !!!

What version of Windows ?

Any data on it you want to keep ?

If no data, then just blow it away using a standard Windows install rather than the factory one which will install bloatware anyway.

There are plenty of password reset CD images out there you can download, burn, then run and they'll reset the password for you. Google is your friend :)

Yeah thanks for reply. It is Windows 10 and there is nothing at all I wish to keep.

I did go thru Mr Google re the password issue, but not being a real "geek" I became very confused by the many options I came across.

However I will reset again as per your suggestion......

It's not a power-on password at bios level is it?

I've had bricked HPs before - UEFI bios can have 'admin' like boot users associated with windows profiles. Blow away windows, it can't validate said users anymore and default admin accts won't either if been changed

Basically made the machines useless as they're TPM stored.

Need more info.
is that the Windows login password (for that one there are ways around it)
or a power on password (hope not)

If its a power on password , you may be out of luck .

If there is nothing on it you want, and it came with a Windows OEM license (Most likely did) then download the media creation tool https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Then you can make a USB to boot off and re-format it and install a new clean copy of Windows 10.

It is Windows log in password....

If its a live a/c & password (email adress as user name) , out of luck (pretty much).
Otherwise , download & burn to CD a pass reset tool (not really worth the effort)

Best way , as above , is to wipe & re-install using a WIn10 install CD/USB .

*** if reloading Win10, DO NOT connect to wifi or network cable untill after Windows is up & running ***
That way, you arnt forced to use email based 'Live" windows a/c
You will then need to click 'dont have users email ' etc so you can use a simple name for Win login .
