hi can anyone please help me?? i have a nec versa m400 it was working fine a little while ago now the screen has gone blank and you can faintly see the word windows when its booting up, and it only works on an external monitor in safe mode. any help would be very appreciated!!!!!

It looks like either the video card has gone bust or something wrong with your motherboard.  It could be your screen too.  Either way, it's going to be an expensive fix if you are out of the warranty period.

Might pay to buy a new laptop instead of paying money to fix this.

i did see a post on this topic here when i googled my problem it was only a little different and i wasnt quite sure if it would apply to me... it did say it was possibly a mother board issue but he seemed to fix it. why would the external screen only work in safe mode. is there an program i can use to try and find the problem??

I don't think you can fix a motherboard issue unless you work as a computer technician with all the right tools around you.  Most motherboard failures mean a total motherboard replacement.

How old is your laptop?  Is it still under warranty?

it was my step fathers computer i thought i could try to fix it and if nothing else use an external screen or even as a media server.. but to no avail. out of warrenty.. this is the post i read but a little over my head but i couldnt hurt to try this i guess.  http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=37&TopicId=6245

I would say it would be better off for you to use this laptop in another way instead of trying to fix it.

Just to add - NEC in the good old days did not make reliable laptops at all.
