A friend of mine has purchased a new HP laptop, and is trying to plug a projector into the monitor out, but it's not a standard socket:

Anyone know what format this is? I assume he'll need to purchase an adapter to convert to VGA?

Oh no no, tell him to just get out his pocket knife and keep whittling away at his VGA plug until it fits.

From the pic that machine looks suspiciously like an HP mini - unfortunately a proprietry port that you have to buy their adapter for (and the adapter has only just been released in the last few weeks in the US, so not sure if it's in NZ yet).

Do a google for hp mini vga and I'm sure you'll read all about it.  Cheers...

Edit: http://www.shopping.hp.com/store/product/product_detail/FY828AA/1?jumpid=in_r329_personalization/browse1/landing_PDP

(it was originally going to cost $79, so I guess be thankfull (ish)).

He's joking, it's a display port as noted earlier.
