I'm in the process of selling my old laptop and assumed it couldn't be posted since it has a non-removeable battery (as would, I assume, the majority of other recent laptops out there).  However looking through TM auctions for sample prices, all of them are advertising shipping with TM's usual selection of carriers.  Is this because there's an exception for laptops somewhere, or just because everyone ignores the restrictions on shipping?

PBTech send oodles of the things via standard couriers. We send a few around at work via normal courier. All clearly laptops and never had any pushback.

So long as its well packaged, dont think they really tend to care as such.

Yes, our experience is the same.  Suppliers send us laptops via normal courier.  We dispatch laptops to clients via the same.  Never any issues.

I have had an issue shipping internationally, but domestically it's never been a problem.

As mentioned above, no problems shipping things with batteries domestically.

However you described your laptop as having a "non-removeable battery". I think most batteries can be removed, provided they aren't soldered. You just need to open the case to do it.

Stick a UN3481 label on it & you're all good.

Then again, this is what NZ Post say:

If sending within New Zealand, additional requirements are:

If the device/equipment is being returned for repair, the battery must be removed and wrapped separately within the parcel if possible.
If the device/equipment is brand new and in the original packaging, send it as it was packed by the manufacturer.
If the device/equipment is used, leave the battery inside the device/equipment and ensure that it cannot be switched on.
There are no additional documentation or labelling requirements.

Ah, thanks for that.  That text is in a drop-down further down so a text search won't find it unless you scroll down and click on two different drop-downs that the info is spread across.

(One for the annoy thread, if they really want to break it up into subsections then have an index at the top leading to each one, don't hide things behind a multitude of drop-downs).
