I' m trying to set up my new laptop. I can get through the steps of choosing the country and keyboard layout but when it comes to the WiFi set up I can choose the acces point but when I hit ENTER to proceed to open the password box nothing happens. 

 

When I go to shut down I get a message on the screnn that say pull down to shutdown as if it is a touchscreen model, which it isnt.

 

 

 

Any ideas please?

To pull down to shut down, you can click and drag it down.

 

You shouldn't need to hit enter to get to the password box, just click on the wifi network name and a password box should pop up. I haven't set up a laptop from scratch for a while so that could be incorrect now.

I don't have any cursor on the screen and the scratch pad isn't working. This is a brand new out of the box set up. 

 

Perhaps, incorrectly, I'm assuming the cursor/scratchpad don't work until the set up is done, otherwise they'd be working right from the start. Perhaps there is some way to activate them.

Sounds like the touch pad drivers haven't been installed yet. If you have a usb external mouse, that should work.

Tried a USB mouse. No go.

 

The previous set up steps, choosing country and keyboard and selecting the wifi network have all been done using the up/down arrows and the enter key. Once the network is chosen I'm unable to proceed further by using the enter key.

Try spacebar to select the network and use tab to get to the connect button.

Otherwise you can bypass the network requirement by doing Shift + F10 (or Shift + fn + F10) and entering OOBE\BYPASSNRO

 

Your computer will restart and there will be an option to select that you don't have network access or something like that when you go through the setup again and get to the network page.

THANK YOU. Tabbing to get to the connect button did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New HPs quite often don't install mouse/pad drivers until an internet connection is available - which as above, can prove difficult to do :) Why ? Who knows, but I've had it a LOT at work with new laptops.

 

Tab and spacebar are your friend when the mouse isn't available.

 

And yup, newer versions of Windows do not play with OOBE\BYPASSNRO anymore :(

Glad you have it sorted.

 

An external mouse will have sorted it too (assuming the laptop has a USB-A port).

 

I run into this sometimes re-imaging Surfaces with a standard (non-Surface) image for work. Touch Screen, and sometimes keyboard and mouse drivers not installed so need to use a dock.
