My work laptop, a Dell XPS M1210, has a VGA port that appears to have died. Likely to require replacement mobo ($1000) apparently, which doesn't seem worth it. It's probably 11 months shy of when I might have been able to just argue for a replacement (and actually I rather like it, although new toys are good).

The main reason why I care is that work I usually hook it up to a 22" external monitor. Is there any cost effective way of hooking it up to the monitor not via VGA. I assume S-Video won't give sufficient resolution, and have heard that external graphic units exist, but I'm not having much luck finding them. Any thoughts or solutions?

can you get a port replicator or docking station for the Dell? they typically have a vga/dvi port in them. might be able to get a 2nd hand one cheap off of trademe

That's a good thought. Actually, there's someone selling a mobo on trademe. Replacing the mobo does seem a bit extreme, but I guess being small, the port really does just attach to the corner...

surely no-one is selling a fully working motherboard on trademe.... its not like you typically 'upgrade' them to a newer version. you might swap one issue for another. at least a port replicator or dock would be useful for other things and may be compatible whn you buy a new dell...

Sounds like you want one of these,

Also Dell's website says your laptop also has component video out?, its a step up from S-video and should be good enough.

Thanks guys. These all seem like excellent solutions. I actually plug a lot of stuff into it when I'm at work, so there's a Belkin Express card based docking station that would cover just about everything except electricity, and the USB ones aren't so bad either. I see now that I do in fact have component video out, so these all seem better options than either a second hand mobo (the guy seems to be selling dismembered bits of an xps m1210. maybe it represents better value than onselling it one piece?).

I actually woudn't mind holding onto this wee thing for another year or so, by which time there is bound to be something really exciting to replace it.

component video is ok for video playback but it tends to be a pain for displaying a computer screen.

IT support investigating Belkin docking station; and hope IT Budget gods smile kindly on me.
