Some people will say macs others will say build your own.....

There isn't a "build your own" option for laptops. You may be able to choose different specs for some models, but you pretty much can't build a laptop like one is used to build a desktop.

I like HP machines myself.

You should first define what's "best" for you. Are you looking for something very portable? Are you looking for something you can use for gaming? Or you just need something to write papers and other office or school related documents?

Is it for email and web browsing only? Do you want strong media capabilities?

Once you decide what are your needs then you can look for models suitable for your specific situation.

It completely depends what you want in a laptop.

I have a MacBook Pro as I like OS X. If I was to buy a PC laptop I'd probably tend toward a Lenovo as I like the old IBM laptop keyboards.
