I am looking around for a laptop that would be good basic everyday use.

Each time I see one I like someone says oh no they are so bad at breaking down.
oh no their support is very slow/bad.

ok I am really interested in a compaq, but most people say get a toshiba as they have great support if anything goes wrong.

I know this is a silly question i suppose as everyone has their own history with laptop and support, but what do you all suggest?

I have a Dell laptop, and had a powersupply and hdd caddy replaced under warranty and all the experience I have personally had with them were great, fast and good customer service (via website)

I've also had a good experience with toshiba, and with asus laptops!

We got a Toshiba for at home... no problems thus far. I use a Toshiba at work day to day with no issues also.

i am using an Acer netbook with a 10" screen. its brilliant for everyday internet and ms office use. very portable and good battery life if you have a 6-cell battery.

My recommendation on brand woul be HP, but regardless of what you go with, go for a 14.1" screen (so not wide screen), example below:

Laptops are supposed to be light and portable, always make me laugh to see people with 17.1" screens (widescreen) as it's like carrying around a desktop and just about as heavy!

I disagree, I think it depends on the computer purpose, and what you want it for, I have a 17.1" laptop, and its great for what I need, which is effectively more an easily transportable full computer - performance over economy, I rarely use it somewhere I cant connect it...

but its also my main gaming rig currently so as a luggable its great... plus I can fit twin 7200rpm disks in it RAIDed up which is nice.

that said, I would like to get a netbook/tablet some stage so I have a truly portable computer as well...
