Hey guys,

I purchased a HP Pavilion dv5-1209ax in June 2009 from Harvey Norman and I am considering changing to an Asus K52JR-SX070V.

Here are the specs:

HP Pavilion dv5-1209ax
2.1GHz AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core Processor
4GB Ram
ATI HD 3650
Windows 7 Professional
2 Year Extended Warranty

Asus K52JR-SX070V
Intel® Core i3 2.26GHz
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
ATI HD5470
Windows® 7 Home Premium

The reason for a change is that I am unhappy with the HP because of performance issues and hibernates at random times (I checked my hibernation settings and they were fine). Also battery runs out in 1 hour even when doing word processing etc.

Also, I heard from other I.T experts that ASUS is a very good brand for laptops.

I don't want to sell on trademe at the moment as I want to check if Harvey Norman will let me trade in my current laptop for a newer laptop.

Do you think that Harvey Norman let me trade in my current laptop with a newer one?

Think youll be pushing it... your best best would be try to get a refund but that might have to go via HP who are more likely to offer you a different HP model.

Yeah as far as im aware they have no obligation to swap it out for you, and even throwing the CGA side of things in they have the right to have a look at the laptop to see if there is a warrantable problem and fix it for you, they still don't have to swap it. Correct me if im wrong

i agree with XPD, also Harvey Norman dont tend to do trade-in's with laptops

That sounds like a better option if they can switch me a different model. I've had these problems for a while.

I've had these problems:

- It hibernates without my permission
- Battery runs out in 45 mins - 1hr (word processing, not gaming)
- Battery goes from 100% to 93%
- Transferring files from External HDD via USB and eSata can cause the computer to freeze often

I have reinstalled Windows 7 twice already and I still have problems with the performance and hibernation issues. I take extremely good care of my computer. I defrag once a week, clean my computer using CCleaner, my files are organised (not all over my computer). I purchased a laptop cooler to prevent overheating of my laptop.

What are the chances of me getting a new replacement since I'm still on the 2 year warranty?

unfortunately I'd say it's doubtful

Apart from: the battery, most laptop batteries only have a 1 year warranty, even thought the laptop has a 2 year warranty. It shouldn't be running flat quite that fast, so you might be able to get a new battery through HP.

- 93% wear is about usual, but if it's dying within an hour, then there is something wrong with the battery, did you fully charge it when you first bought it?
- Hibernation is a Windows software problem, so HP wouldn't replace your laptop for that
- Transferring files is also a Windows problem, I assume you are using Vista? that's the biggest problem, it'll do that between HDD and external even on a powerful machine, have you got Service Pack 1/2 for Vista yet? try that, ti does speed up the HDD transfer rate a bit

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Well put an also HP will most likely repair or replace the faulty parts of the laprop rather than swap it for another model as you have left it a long time, generally it is a good idea to get things fixes as soon as the problems arise.

First thing: Have you taken these issues up with Harvey Norman or HP?

If you have and they have not been resolved, then they may be open to an exchange. By resolved, I mean they have tried to on numerous occasions to resolve the issue. And yes, they do replace the machines so you'll end up with another HP, but they are good computers... most of the time.

From past experience HP are generally good when it comes resolving customer issues when the process that they have in place is followed. Some things to insure though are that HP's service agent and not just Harvey Norman have been servicing the machine (seen far too many cases where "but the machines been in several times" only to find out it's never been to HP once!

Have you checked the ligh sensor. My HP has a light sensor instead of mechanical switch to activate hibernation. The idea is that closing the lid makes it go dark and hence triggers hibernation. This is great in theory but I found hovering over it etc can make the laptop hibernate.

there MUST be some setting causing the hibernation. it doesnt just do it on its own. have you checked the power settings?
- power button
- lid setting
- that you checked the settings on the correct power plan
- low battery auto action
- special task button (most laptops have them, they may be assignable)
- some other hp novelty application (never used an hp so i wouldnt know)?

A faulty battery could also be causing the hibernation

I did some Laptop Shopping online and came across this deal:

I looked at the Processors and I'm not sure which one is better between the Intel Pentium Dual Core and the AMD Athlon x2 Duo Core Processor. Which one is better in terms of performance?

Also notebookcheck tells me that the current graphics card on my laptop is a ATI HD 3650 is better than the Toshiba's ATI HD 4570. Which one is better in terms of light gaming (not looking for playing games in high quality, just medium or low)

Also between the HP DV5-1209ax and the Toshiba L500, which one is better in battery performance? I received my new HP battery yesterday but didn't see much change in battery performance. For word processing, the battery lasted around 1.5 hours.

Please Note - I'm not looking for a desktop because I travel with my laptop. Also, I do not mind gaming with low graphics.

johnrutter: I received my new HP battery yesterday but didn't see much change in battery performance. For word processing, the battery lasted around 1.5 hours.

I've found this type of performance to be quite typical of the battery that is shipped with a laptop - especially with more powerful processors, faster graphics chipsets, wireless everything and lots of USB devices, the only technology that really hasn't changed are batterys.

I would imagine that the HP comes with a 6 cell battery which I would think of a laptop such as yours 2hrs would be the max. time. Changing to a different brand is probably not going to solve anything unless it comes with a larger battery.
